Shredded tree stump mulch...

The wood chips on the left are all that is left after running small trees and branches through a chipper. If the operator has done a good job, the material on the right is all that is left after using a portable stump grinder to grind up a tree stump. Of course, you can't see underground so you won't know if all of the stumps have been removed until you start stripping topsoil and excavating for the foundation.

By the way, termites love to eat untreated wood chips and "shredded mulch" from many types of trees. So do not use it anywhere near your house or other wooden structures.
